What else do you need to know?

A concern among people taking a DNA test  is whether factors such as diet, age or medications can alter the test results. It is a very valid question given that many people today are passionate about trends in self-care, nutrition and longevity, creating a space to wonder how these lifestyle choices affect our genetic makeup.

When this question arises, the short answer is no, in no way do dietary choices, medications or age affect the results of a US DNA test.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the molecular blueprint of our entire biological existence and is made up of four sequences: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C) and guanine (G), which are extraordinarily resilient and remain constant from the moment of conception until death.

This stability is why DNA is a highly reliable source for genetic analysis, including establishing family relationships.

Does diet affect DNA?

No. In recent years there has been talk of nutrigenomics, a science that studies the interaction between food and genes. It seeks to understand how the nutrients we consume through food and genes interact to determine which genetic variations favor which foods. And while we know that certain diets can influence gene expression, they do not alter the frequency of DNA itself.

Eating a specific type of diet does not alter the underlying genetic code, which is the part studied in a US DNA test to discover family links. Therefore your diet will not change the test results.

Does age affect DNA?

No. It is true that as we age our bodies undergo a number of changes, because there are changes in individual cells that can lead to age-related diseases. But this is not the same as a genetic mutation, which is transmitted from parent to child and occurs at conception.

The DNA segments used for family linkage tests are resistant to age-related changes. This invariance makes it possible to have high-fidelity results to help people discover their family history.

Do vitamin supplements affect DNA?

No. A common misconception is that vitamin supplements can alter DNA, but nothing could be further from the truth. This confusion arises thanks to epigenetics, which are modifications to DNA that do not modify its sequence but can affect gene activity, i.e. chemical compounds that are added to individual genes to regulate their activity but without modifying the entire gene sequence.

Only some drugs for the treatment of serious diseases, such as cancer, affect how DNA is expressed within the human body, but do not modify the DNA sequence itself. More commonly used drugs such as antibiotics, drugs for heart disease or antidepressants do not affect the DNA structure that is used for family linkage testing.

These tests focus on genetic markers that cannot be altered by external factors which guarantees high accuracy in the results.

What can affect the test?

The only thing that can affect the accuracy of the test is the quality of the DNA sample. Factors such as sample collection or sample degradation can affect the result leading to inconclusive results. This is not age alteration caused by external factors, but problems with the sample. This is why our kits contain detailed instructions for taking the sample to minimize these risks.

How can we help you at DNA Solutions?

DNA testing is extremely accurate and reliable due to the inherent stability of DNA. The DNA sequence in each person is unique (except in identical twins) and is not altered by external lifestyle factors. This ensures that US DNA test results are highly accurate and consistent over time.

At DNA Solutions we are renowned for our accuracy and reliability of test results. Our experience of over 27 years of testing worldwide supports our expertise in Paternity, Maternity, Parentage, Parentage and Genetic Profile Testing. In addition, we can analyze various alternative sample types for discreet sample collection with high accuracy.

Our reputation in the field of genetics and paternity testing has been built through years of service and the use of advanced technologies that are available on several continents.
